Bringing home Hermione's redd dress

Today, I am bringing home another post that I wrote for Craftingcon last year, like I did with this post. The pictures are from August last year, so no toddler were harmed (put outside in the freezing cold) to make this post. This time the theme was Harry Potter. I had never sewn anything Harry Potter inspired, but it seems that I am one of the few. There is so much inspiration on the web, that I could not immediately decide, how I was going to add something.

Vandaag breng ik weer een blogpost naar mijn eigen blog, net zoals ik ook met deze deed. Ik naaide deze jurk in Augustus, toen het nog lekker warm was, dus vrees niet dat ik mijn drie jarige in de vrieskou buiten zette. Het thema van die maand was Harry Potter. Ik naaide nog nooit iets wat geïnspireerd was door de boeken/film, maar tijdens mijn google zoektocht blijk ik zo'n beetje de enige. Het kostte dus wel wat tijd om te bedenken hoe ik iets nieuws ging toevoegen aan alle mooie bestaande creaties.

While brainstorming in my head, I got the idea to make the ball gown of Hermione, from when she goes to dance in the Goblet of fire. I prefer the books over the movies, but I of course searched for images of the film. The ball gown did not give me enough inspiration for an every day look (which I was going for). I continued my search for a Hermione dress and then I saw her red dress from the wedding (last book), which won me over instantly.

Tijdens mijn eerste interne brainstorm sessies dacht ik aan de baljurk van Hermelien, uit de Vuurbeker. Ik geef de voorkeur over de boeken in plaats van aan de films, maar voor inspiratie keek ik toch hoe ze het in de film vormgaven. Die outfit gaf me niet genoeg inspiratie voor een jurk die ze elke dag aan kon (dat was mijn doel). Na nog wat verder scrollen kwam ik de rode jurk tegen, die Hermelien droeg op de bruiloft in het laatste boek en toen was ik verkocht. 

The dress I made for my three year old is clearly inspired and not a try to copy the original. I made the dress from a left over red thick jersey (probably punto di roma). I did not have enough for a circle skirt (every girls dream). The A line skirt still looks full due to the thickness of the material. I used the selvage of the fabric to finish the arm holes and neckline. The selvage have some frills that reminded me of the lace that in the original design.

De jurk die ik naaide is duidelijk "geïnspireerd"en niet een directe duplicatie. Ik gebruikte een restje dikke jersey. Ik had net genoeg om deze jurk te maken, dus een cirkel rok zat er echt niet in (de duidelijke favoriete optie van mijn dochters). Door de dikte van het materiaal staat de rok echter nog steeds behoorlijk wijd uit. Op het origineel is met kant gewerkt en om zoiets te doen gebruikte ik de gerafelde zelfkant van de stof om de hals en armsgaten af te werken. 

The eye catcher of the dress is of course that flower. It looks crazy sophisticated (at least to me), but it was really super easy to make. I used this tutorial, and I made the flower while watching tv (it was finished during one episode of Elementary). I ruffled a long strip for the waist detail. I considered doing the same for the shoulders, but seeing she will wear this the coming months with a cardigan, I decided against it (I did not want the extra bulk).

Het meest in het oogspringende detail is natuurlijk de bloem. Het ziet er super ingewikkelde uit ( woordspeling), maar hij was super makkelijk te maken. Ik gebruikte deze tutorial en creëerde de bloem tijdens het tv kijken in minder dan een uur. Ik dacht erover om ook wat frutsels aan de schouders toe te voegen, maar besloot van niet. Deze jurk zou met een vestje gedragen gaan worden in de herfst en winter, dus dan zitten frutsels alleen in de weg.
