Today, I am part of the Pool side Beach party blog tour. In March, I was part of the Spring break blog tour, and two of the organizers (Sprouting JubeJube and Lulu&Celeste of that event joined hands to bring you this most recent party. This time 27 bloggers will treat you on all things pool party like swim suits, sun hats and cover-ups. I decided not to choose and make all three.
The main piece of my outfit is the bikini. My middle daughter asked me for swim trousers a while ago, because that way she can go to the toilet much easier. When I asked her if she only wanted the bottom part, or also a top, her eyes began to sparkle. She had not considered getting a top, but she loved the idea of a bikini. I searched my Ottobre pile but did not find a pattern in her size that could please me. So, I hacked a swimsuit pattern from the latest edition.
It turned out that my daughter has a three size difference (on the Ottobre scale) between her chest (size 98) and hip size (size 80). I know that swim wear fabric is extremely elastic, but it still pleases me that I can just make her a bikini that fits her perfectly. A few months ago, I bought the aqua colored swim suit fabric at Textielstad, but I did not have any specific plans yet. I just wanted to have to possibility to sew some swim wear if I ever needed it. Last week, I bought some additional purple to have a nice contrast with the blue. My daughter loves it, she begged for fittings while I was sewing and she actually wanted to sleep in it the night it was finished.
The second piece of the outfit is a bucket hat from Flosstyle (currently available with a 15% discount). I made my mother a summer hat to try out the pattern. My daughter loved that hat so much, that she wanted one in exactly the same size. Of course I complied (keeping in mind that this way I can actually borrow it from her). I used jersey on one side and a heavy fabric on the other (the same I used for this foldable bag). Top stitching the jersey on a non-stretching fabric was not a joyful moment, but I managed and I think it looks great. I bought the star jersey at Joyfits at a crazy discount. She regularly has heavily discounted fabrics behind the "low prices" button. Earlier this week I needed some mustard yellow jersey (and she has my favorite color) and I turned out buying several meters of A-quality fabric for very low prices.
The last piece of the outfit is this beach cover-up. Three years ago I bought a meter of jersey bath towel, also at joyfits. Inspiration did not come though. The blog tour was just the right push. I made her an oversized circle skirted dress like cover op. With hindsight I should have added a hood. I did not think of it, because she already had a hat, but I should have realized she would want one because she will be wearing this cover-up at the indoor pool we visit every week. I will simply add the hood next week (or I at least I hope I will).
Today is the last day of the tour, so that means you do not have to wait, to check all the things the other bloggers made. There a lot of inspiring stuff, check out the others through this list.
