Back to school with Made It patterns

In two weeks, school will start again. This time all four of our kids will go because my little one turned four this summer. The beginning of the new school year always gives a double feeling. It is the end of the summer holiday, the moment we again have to use alarm clocks, but also the moment my kids see their friends again. New teacher, new class room and new things to learn usually equals excitement. This newness is best celebrated with some more new stuff. New lunch box, new drinking bottle, new bag and new clothes. In our house I of course make the latter two and today I am showing you a back to school outfit of my eldest in Made It Patterns.

In the Netherlands the kids do not wear uniforms to school. The Netherlands is very liberal in the clothes that are allowed to school and I would say there are pretty much no rules. If my kid would go in a bikini it might be a bit weird, but I am not sure if it would be against the "rules".  I know that there are bloggers on the tour that will have to stick to grey colors on their outfits, so we went overboard (pun intended) with a very colorful knit boat fabric. My daughter picked it herself from my stash.

I made her a Groove dress. A dress that for me symbolizing freedom, although it does not twirl like a circle skirt, its wide skirt is definitely approved by my kids. This is the second Groove dress that I made, and like the first time, I slightly hacked it. Like I said, the Groove has a wide skirt, so wide that I actually could not cut it from my one meter directional print fabric. I never read fabric requirements and am a cut-first-solve-later kind a girl. So, only after cutting the front, I realized that there was no way I was going to cut a full back from this fabric. I decided to simply color block a contrasting fabric into it. To make it seem predetermined, I also added a strip to the front. Also one of the sleeves needed a color block. As usual, I really like my fix, and might like it better than if I would have been able to cut the entire dress from the boat fabric.

To take her new bottle and lunch box, I also made her a Sling Bag. I made medium size and I am totally in love with this bag! When I made this dress, I had a long and narrow leftover. No clue what I would be able to make from it, I just put it back in my stash. I was over the moon when I found out that this bag actually needed almost the entire piece! This bag and the remnant seemed to be made for each other. I really like this fabric it made gorgeous dress, but also an awesome bag and the black is perfect because this bag will see a lot of floor. To did not wanted an upside down bird so some pieces were not cut on the fold. I simply cut two and added a seam allowance.

I used two rather lightweight fabrics for this bag, so I cut a third layer, from some fluffy fabric to give the bag more body. This bag pattern is really awesome, it has two small pockets, a key chain and sews up surprisingly fast. Instead of making a key chain loop, I used a piece of elastic.

To celebrate the back to school tour, there is a 20% discount store wide with the code "btsins" until the end of August. I strongly advise to visit the shop and especially check out the Fold collection. I really stole my heart. Here you can see a mash-up that I made from two of those patterns.

Bringing home the Spirited away dress

Besides posting on my own blog, in the previous months, I have also been posting on the Craftingcon blog. Today, I am bringing one of those posts home, one that fits the halloween theme. The Craftingcon blog has a different theme every month, and the dress that I am showing today, was sewn for the "anime" theme. I picked one of the most well known Japanese animation movies (and one I have actually seen), Spirited Away to base the look on.

The movie is about a little girl who ends up in a world with ghosts. Those ghosts were the inspiration for this outfit. The ghosts are black and have a white mask for a face. Somehow the Groove dress by Made it patterns immediate came to mind as the base for this garment. The pattern cover shows a super cool black dress, so it might not be hard to imagine where my pattern inspiration came from.

For a while I was doubting how to incorporate the face. For long I was planning to do a flex print on the front, but then I got the idea to do it at the back of the hood. I choose the high low hem version, so that meant the back was going to be extra long. Perfect ghost material. Then I decided to just use a mask for the shoot and keep the dress black. I started cutting the dress from black summer sweat (bought at Joyfits) and realized there was no way to cut a full hood from the fabric. I had one meter and had been a bit optimistic (who ever reads fabric requirements).

No problem, enter my original plan. I pieced a hood together from black leftovers and some silver sparkling sweat (also from Joyfits). I considered using some white fabric, but I feared that that would result in an unwashable garment. This silver sparkle fabric is kind a grey, so totally fine to wash with black. I cut some flex by hand (which was actually a left over from somebody else, that I snatched with permission on a gathering, because I could not stand it going into the bin)

My girl, who is usually into colorful clothes, loved this addition to her wardrobe. It was a bit warm when I sewed it, but it is perfect for this weather. My daughter was very willing to play a little ghost for the shoot. Especially because I allowed her to put it on backwards as well. How cool would it have been if I actually made holes for the eyes!

Pass the Madeit pattern Mash up

When the Fold collection by Madeit Patterns was released, I bought several of the patterns. To my shame I had only sewed one until now. The Fold collection deserves much more love, but I did not get to it due to all the deadlines I gave myself by applying to tests and competitions. Therefore, When Madeit Patterns organized the #passthemadeitpattern on Instagram I immediate started to compete. I needed that little push, and in the last draw, was allowed to play! Today I am showing you what I made.

You know I like pattern alterations and after the beautiful hacks by Solo Sewing and Jurkjesmama, I really felt the urge to come with something awesome. I decided to combine two patterns from the Fold collection into one garment. I used the Matrix Polo pattern and the Balloon Fold dress.

Two weeks ago, I checked the Pantome fall colors and bought at Textielstad the colors that kind a resembled them. The color blocking possibilities of my mash were perfect to show off a few of those beauties. The colors are not that intense as the true Pantome, but together they work well.

I was really planning to sew for another one than for my eldest, but again my easiest model got the job. This time my excuse was the minimum size of the polo. I wanted a fitted bodice and my eldest's chest was perfect for the smallest polo size. So I could not have gone smaller. I only redrew the skirt of the Balloon pattern such that it fitted the Matrix, so relatively easy mash I would say, but I love the result. If you are planning something similar, make sure you use stretchy interfacing for the collar, or else your daughter might get stuck.

I tried adding pockets, but they really distorted the shape of the dress. When my daughter was wearing the dress she told me she did not need extra pockets anyway, the skirt itself is one big pocket.

My favorite of the three ways to wear this garment is the balloon shape, so the elastic on the inside at her waist. My daughter's favorite version is the elastic on the outside. I think, I would appreciate the outside skirt version more if I had a nice double face fabric. Due to my daughter's skinny waist the maxi version is a bit constricting her movements. The elastic that fist her waist is around her ankles in the maxi version, and due to her skinny waist the elastic circle is small. The maxi might not be her favorite to play in, it is great to sit in! My kids love to put their knees in their dress ripping through all seams, with this Balloon skirt she can cover herself without problems.

In case you are still waiting to find out what that game is what I keep talking about, I will shortly explain it. If you get (randomly) chosen to play along, you will receive a Fold collection pattern for free, and you will have about two weeks to sew up your version. If you want to play, just find my instagram pic, repost it with #passthemadeitpattern and #madeitpatterns and you bought yourself a ticket.
