Project Run and Play week 2: Ariel dress

This weeks Project Run and Play's theme is Cosplay, sewing something costume inspired but not an actual costume. I had already decided on my post, and then I read her post, and actually sewed something different yesterday evening, so instead of showing you my last Wild Things Coat that I am showing you an Ariel inspired outfit.

Beth wrote about the effect of the no-judges rule. She fears that people will use the link up to spice up some archive material. No judges also might lead to less motivated people, the winning outfit is not selected on theme interpretation, just luck. I had not looked at it that way, but she struck a nerve. I realized that I was not taking Project Run and Play as serious as I should (even though I had not heard about the no-judges rule yet).

Last week's sew was intentionally sewn in knit after I heard the theme, but I did not put much extra thought in that outfit. The thing I was planning on showing today had already been finished before the themes were announced and just coincidentally matched. After reading her post I changed my plans. I looked through the amazing interpretations and decided I was going to sew an every day princess look. I was probably inspired by this amazing Belle outfit, but inspiration is why we read blogs right?

I first considered a princess my kids like best, but Elsa was already picked. So I though about my own favourite princess. That is Ariel, I was a little girl when the little mermaid came out and I must have seen it at least 40 times. The deadline for the link up was close so I had to be practical. I just took the pattern of the Nivalis dress that I sewed last week and whipped up an Ariel outfit in one evening. I added pockets again and this time I lined the hood.

The Nivalis (affiliate link) pattern from Sofilantjes was simply perfect for this. The chest part is like the purple sea shell bra, the skirt part is like the tail and the hood is Ariels red hear. I really love the result. The red and purple fabric (Joyfits) are uni jersey's, but the tail fabric is faux suede (Textielstad). It is extremely soft and as you can see in the pictures she could not stop touching it.

When I was almost ready to publish this post I checked the link up and I saw that since I looked last an Ariel was linked up. Check out that great outfit here. I think it is fun to see that the same inspiration source can still yield very different results. Many people were inspired by Star Wars for example, but all are different,  oh how I love Project Run and Play. Beth thanks for the wake up call!

I love to hear what you think of my creations. Feel free to leave a comment in the language you prefer (although Google translate might have to assist me if you choose something different than English, German, Dutch or Hungarian). If you buy anything through my affiliate links, I get a small commission (the price stays the same for you), I am very grateful for everything that feeds my fabric addiction.

  1. I like your Ariel version. I do not follow project run and play although I feel this one would be one that fits me. I am happy I do follow you though ;-)

    1. Trying to decrease my fabric stash, but the fact that these were all in it says something about it's size...

  6. This is the perfect, every day Ariel. I think she's my favorite princess too! :) Well or maybe Mulan... I like them both.

    1. Mulan! That would also have been a great inspiration or the Lion King... My three favorites as a kid.

  7. I love the red hood, and the skirt looks so soft! Ariel has always been one of my favorites too. I didn't mean to make anyone feel guilty for linking up an old post--people have been doing that for ages on PRP! I feel like the nice part of having the winner chosen by a judge rather than random number is that the people who really wanted to be considered for a win could put in the work that they wanted to, on one or more submissions, and still anyone could link up anything they wanted to show off, new or old, with as many submissions as they wanted, without feeling like someone might think they were doing it just for the extra entries. Like, if I had a cool simple Star Wars t-shirt that I made for my son, I might like to link it up so that other PRP people could see it, but I won't because I wouldn't want it to look like I wanted extra entries.
